Your support is needed to protect Highlands ranch
Dear Highlands Ranch Resident
The Douglas County School District Board of Education has started an initiative to close some elementary schools in Highlands Ranch, citing decreasing enrollment numbers and the need to fund new schools in new neighborhoods.
That is, Highland Ranch residents are being asked to bear the negative impact of closing neighborhood schools in favor of building new elementary schools for new construction areas.
Whether or not you have school-age children, it should be readily apparent that a healthy and thriving school district is the lifeblood of a community, and key to continue to attract new families and maintain the value of our homes.
While it is true that Highlands Ranch is an established neighborhood, it is inaccurate to cite declining enrollment numbers and an “aging population” as a reason for closing schools. A healthy neighborhood school system is what allows communities to continue to regenerate and thrive. Closing schools creates a self-fulfilling prophecy of an aging population, and creates a void in the neighborhoods losing a school. Not to mention that remaining schools suddenly are confronted with significantly larger class sizes, to the detriment of those attending.
Moreover, Highlands Ranch residents should not be penalized for choosing to live in an established neighborhood, and for the failure of Douglas County to properly plan for growth in other communities. If Developers have been given unfettered permission to build new housing developments, and new residents are choosing to live in those communities, the onus and responsibility for building schools to support those new developments should fall squarely on those parties – not the residents of Highlands Ranch. We are appreciative of the need to build schools in those communities, however, not at our expense. In fact, approximately 40% of Highlands Ranch property tax goes to our school district, money well spent to continue to attract families to this wonderful neighborhood. The desire of the Douglas County School Board is to now close some schools, and use your property tax to fund schools in other neighborhoods.
Many families continue to move to Highlands Ranch in appreciation of the lifestyle offered and the strong neighborhood school system. Failing to attract these families will be to the detriment of our community as a whole.
Please show your support and sign our petition. We need to keep our schools in Highlands Ranch. Together, we can create positive change and make a difference in the lives of those affected by this issue.
The fallacy of
declining enrollment
Superintendent Kane cites declining school enrollment as a reason for closing schools in Highlands Ranch. Read why this is a misguided sentiment and simply creates a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Preserving
Highlands Ranch
Highlands Ranch residents should not be held responsible for inadequate planning by the Douglas County School Board and unfettered growth within the county. Say no to shutting down schools in Highlands Ranch.
